One of the costs of printing that customers do not always legislate for are setting up costs. It isn’t just the cost of materials that need to be factored in. Processes like spot UV and 3D Spot UV require multiple printing runs and it can cost nearly as much to print 1 as 250 or 500 and the price becomes more cost effective the more printing is needed.
Another related issue is when a customer might want say 500 prints, but within that a number of different designs. Printers have to be set up separately for each so the cost is more than the cost for printing 500 prints exactly the same. Having said that, we do have a state of the art 3D spot UV printer that makes printing different versions much more cost effective. It now makes printing multiple versions of smaller numbers financially viable where it wasn’t before.
